And then second Boom!  Links of London is doing an entire Mr Men & Little Miss jewellery and charms collection, targeting the youngsters, but even better cause it’s as cute as can be.  Enjoy the pictures and give in to the child in you.  FYI, 20 days till Christmas!

Aurora Borealis: the canvas of an artistic journey

There’s something in the air lately that has all of us hankering for a life changing turnaround.  Some of us change, some of us think about it, some of us will never do.  And while change stories may vary, the one thing they have in common is they all inspire the rest of us greatly.

Here’s one of those stories to help us start this week with optimism.  Milena Dimitrokallis, is first and foremost a friend.  In this story though she is a former martial art instructor turned marketeer, turned hotelier, turned artist.  The fact that she has effectively and successfully made so many changes in her life makes her the absolute inspiration story for today.

Milena’s art venture has a name and a very depictive one.  It’s called Aurora Borealis.  Just because I’m so fascinated with the choice of name, I’ll restrain from revealing what Aurora Borealis means and  urge you to find out for yourselves here.

And since I consciously avoid talking about art and what I see in every creation (unless of course I can spot an owl..) I’ll let you enjoy her artistic journey in search of tranquility, inspiration and completion and see if you too are inspired to bring change into your life.  Preferably, sometime close.

Tattoo-ology

Once the mark of the outcast, the rocker and the rebel, now the it-accessory from lawyers to athletes, women -mostly women- to politicians, students to nuns (I guess..).  One fine day back in August heavily pregnant miss Dora Bora and yours faithfully set out on a research for the best tattoo place in Athens.  Dora focused on hygiene, I focused on the artists.  Here’s what we found out for first-timers (if there still are any):

-Research what you want.  It must age well with you and be timeless, at least in your mind.
-Research your studio. Hygiene comes first.
-Research your artist. You need to get along.
-Do it.
-Look after it. Sun protect it.

Daddy aint that cool with you having a tattoo?  UV tattoo is one cheeky way to do it, as long as you can stay away from discos and psychedelic parties.  Although, I wouldn’t recommend that, as it is still not clear whether UV ink could be carcinogenic. And I wouldn’t recommend the white ink tattoos either as most of the time they look more like a scar than ink art.

Who let the Books out?

Imagine something like a car, with 26 windows and 1500 books.  Imagine a big white van with adjustable levels for the convenience of its guests. Imagine a non profit initiative materialized aesthetically in the highest standards.  Now stop imagining.  It’s a mobile library in the streets of Mexico and I wish I could be there as we speak to see it in person.

What I saw..All Star Color Explosion

Last week, Converse All Star popped up in Glyfada and what a color pop up that was!  There were colors, actually tons of them, in spray cans, tubes, crayons, markers, couldn’t hope for anything more colorful than that.  Then there were friends.  And cocktails.  And chocolates.  And then there were Panayiotis and Spit custom hand painting the guests’ All Star’s.

So yes, I had copious amounts of fun, particularly because upon arrival I had my own All Star pair customized with my name and a “big badda boom” illustration.  Only problem is I love my new “Bomb” Stars so much I don’t wanna wear them outside.  I will eventually, so if you see me please watch your step; step on them and it’s a “deal breaker”!

To show our appreciation on hand painting and our love on customized “classics”, we thought of styling up my “Bomb” All Star’s with some of the limited edition hand painted t-shirts you will soon find exclusively in Frock n’ Roll and online.

The Pop Up Store aka Converse Gallery will be there for a short time to host the COLORS collection of Converse.  Just bear in mind it takes a couple of hours to paint a pair so if you want one you need to hurry.  And if you can’t get there on time, no worries, Converse Gallery will pop up in more Converse stores, so stay tuned for the updates.

What I saw..Milan Design Week

I know I know, you have h-art enough.  We might have overdone it with art posts lately but we try to keep up with the crisis, people, and just because shopping doesn’t rocket sky high on our behalf, it doesn’t mean our inspiration will have to suffer too.  So be quiet, read what we write (that is said in a polite way, with a smile…), be happy and repeat.  It’s good for you!

And while the topic is inspiration, we are delighted to present a humongous photo-story  unfolding in the heart of Milan, during the infamous Design Week (Salone Internazionale del Mobile) which we’ll all have the pleasure to enjoy through the lens of manic-street-pinner, aka my sister, Galatia.

Controprogetto design studio has launched a project called fuoRIsalone: a collecting center for a new kind of waste – reusable waste. Enveloped by a sculpture built with leftover materials from the setting-up of Tortona Design Week, fuoRIsalone is a monument to recycling and a place for exchange and interaction with designers and stagers, aimed at managing reutilization and at giving back to all resources their full potential.

The not so super heroes

Just another bite of art, dark and melancholic this time, but so very real.  Sums up our life lately, non? Which is why I was so attracted to French photographer Benjamin Bechet’s latest series “I Am Winnie the Pooh”.  Bechet kidnaps some of the most famous superheroes and children’s icons from their fairytale settings and strips them of their supernatural powers by showing them in real life situations.

“The project serves as a reminder that what you see is never what you get, that people are always more complex, that each identity is only partial and that we are all one, none and a hundred thousand.” Benjamin Bechet  for HuffPost UK Culture.

• Florals: We’ve covered that in the previous post. Not a right time for shrinking violets.
• Pastels: Consider it a prettier, sweeter and more subtle take on the recent colour-blocking trend. Think marshmallows in an old fashioned sweetie shop and you’ll get it right.
• Navajo Prints: Angular triangles and dusty bright colours originating from the Navajo people of native America have managed to find their way into the fashion industry as well as that of clothing subgenres like skate boarding. Ideally teamed with colors that are part of the pattern.
• Colour Block (Bright and Bold): Keep the combo with up to 3 players and prefer electric bright emerald, fuchsia, mint and orange.
• Sheer & Short: No boyish looks this season. Feminine will be your middle name.
• Lace: Why don’t you combine Lace, Sheer and Short and make it a ‘day to remember’?
• Pleats: For all Alexa Chung’s out there, polished granny is the look and I’m not personally buying it. My “pleats please” will be more origami inspired, more Halston wannabes and far less granny. Granny is “to love”, not “to wear”

The colours: Black and White (together), Pastels, all shades of Blue from Azure to Sapphire (but then we are Greeks so blue is our black anyway).

The mood: The mood is light.  It’s where serious and fun meet.

The tip: Try to put all that at the back of your mind and improvise. Do not get trapped in the Spanish MegaPower uniform, i.e. pastel skinny jeans every day of the week.
