Jewel Layering is the thing

8 Jan

by Dimitria Ioannidou//

Jewel layering, arm party, jewel colony, arm swag, bling crowning.  You name it.  And as long as you stack half your jewellery box on one hand, you’ve got one of the biggest accessory trends this year (and last year too).  What’s cooler than accessorizing your outfit with fun, colorful bangles and bracelets without worries that someone could find it “too much”?  Be inspired and get on with the trend cause now’s the season to be extravagant.

The magic touch of Madame Grès

12 Dec

by Marjan Schrooten//

How about this for a pre-festive treat: ‘Madame Grès – Sulptural Fashion’ at the Antwerp Fashion Museum (MoMu); all you need is a ticket to Antwerp and another one for the exhibition (€8, that’s the price two freddo cappuccinos or a glass of bubbly) and whoops, there it is!
This inspiring exhibition shows the work of the Parisian couturière Madame Grès (1903–1993), who considered herself as much a sculptor as a fashion designer: ‘I would have like to have been a sculptor. Working with stone or fabrics is really rather the same for me.’ She was a real master-draper, draping her designs straight onto the model, without using the scissors or needle too much, which made her the pioneer of seamless clothing. None other than Madame Kelly, Piaff, Dietrich and Kennedy belonged to her privileged circle of clients. The soothing yet sleek interior design of the exhibition, the work of Belgian artist Renato Nicolodi, leaves room for the beautiful creations to breathe and stand out on their own, while discretely communicating with the more recent designs by Madame Grès-inspired fashion artists such as Alber Elbas (Lanvin) Yohji Yamamoto, Haider Ackermann and Jean Paul Gaultier. Silk jersey would have been nowhere without the magical touch of Madame Grès.

And then December came and Boom! my favourite Paris concept store, colette is being taken over by Roger Hargreaves’ heroes.

And then second Boom!  Links of London is doing an entire Mr Men & Little Miss jewellery and charms collection, targeting the youngsters, but even better cause it’s as cute as can be.  Enjoy the pictures and give in to the child in you.  FYI, 20 days till Christmas!

Aurora Borealis: the canvas of an artistic journey

3 Dec

by Dimitria Ioannidou//

There’s something in the air lately that has all of us hankering for a life changing turnaround.  Some of us change, some of us think about it, some of us will never do.  And while change stories may vary, the one thing they have in common is they all inspire the rest of us greatly.

Here’s one of those stories to help us start this week with optimism.  Milena Dimitrokallis, is first and foremost a friend.  In this story though she is a former martial art instructor turned marketeer, turned hotelier, turned artist.  The fact that she has effectively and successfully made so many changes in her life makes her the absolute inspiration story for today.

Milena’s art venture has a name and a very depictive one.  It’s called Aurora Borealis.  Just because I’m so fascinated with the choice of name, I’ll restrain from revealing what Aurora Borealis means and  urge you to find out for yourselves here.

And since I consciously avoid talking about art and what I see in every creation (unless of course I can spot an owl..) I’ll let you enjoy her artistic journey in search of tranquility, inspiration and completion and see if you too are inspired to bring change into your life.  Preferably, sometime close.

Saved the best part for last.  You can buy these pieces of art.  When I say “buy” I don’t just mean they are put for sale, I mainly mean they are affordable so you can actually buy them.  Plus they’re charged with special female power of change, creativity and world giving which I’m sure will bring tons of luck in the house.  Im so in need of good fortune, aren’t you?
